Chocolate Malt Ice Cream
Chocolate Malt Ice Cream turns your favorite milkshake into a summer dessert you can enjoy by the scoop! This no-cook, egg free, easy homemade chocolate ice cream is combined with malted milk powder for that good old-fashioned taste.
If you love a good old fashioned chocolate malt milkshake, then this homemade ice cream is for you! It’s creamy, chocolatey, malty, rich, and smooth!
It’s actually funny how much I love a chocolate malt, seeing as how I hate chocolate malted milk balls. (Say that five times fast!) They’re just too crunchy for my taste. But a homemade chocolate malt shake is my absolute favorite! I thought, why not just turn it into ice cream?!

Chocolate Malt Ice Cream
The sweet and nutty flavor of malted milk powder brings out the richness of the chocolate in this easy homemade ice cream.
Simply whisk cocoa powder, malted milk powder, and sugar together until no lumps appear. You can also sift these ingredients with a fine mesh sieve for best results.
Then gradually whisk in the heavy cream and milk, and stir until the dry ingredients dissolve. Pour the mixture into an ice cream maker and process according to the directions of your machine. So easy!
At this point you will either enjoy the ice cream soft-serve style, or place it in a container to freeze completely. You could fold in malted milk balls before you freeze it, if you want an ice cream with chunks, but I love the smooth, creamy, pure chocolate malt flavor as-is.
I love homemade ice cream so much that I have two machines! If I forget to freeze the bowl for my Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker, then I just use the Ice Cream Maker Attachment on my Bosch Universal Mixer with some ice and rock salt. Both are great ice cream makers!

Followed recipe exactly. Did not freeze up. Tried to freeze entire mixture for 4 hours and re-try. Still not frozen.
Ergo, this recipe will not work without either addition of eggs and/or boiling and then chilling the milk and cream mixture.
That’s really odd. You processed it in an ice cream maker first?
This ice cream is so so amazing! My dad always used to take me for chocolate malts from Foster’s Freeze when I was young. This ice cream is that taste of childhood! It’s my new favorite obsession!
I’m so glad you like it! It’s a favorite of ours too. Thanks for sharing your experience with the recipe Brandi!
Any recommendations on adapting this recipe into a no-churn version? I don’t have an ice cream maker. Thanks
Most no churn ice creams you will whip heavy cream and then fold in sweetened condensed milk. I would whisk the cocoa powder and malt milk powder with the sweetened condensed milk and leave out the additional sugar and milk. Here’s a similar no churn recipe so you can see the instructions: https://www.dessertnowdinnerlater.com/no-churn-cake-batter-ice-cream/
So easy to make and so very good.
Yay! I’m so glad you loved it!
I made this ice cream yesterday and it had rave reviews from everyone! So easy and by all accounts, delicious. The only thing I modified was that I used milo instead of malt powder.
I’m so glad to hear you enjoyed this recipe Laura! Thanks for sharing your review!
Wow, no cook, egg free chocolate ice cream! Very interesting. I’ve only made the traditional variety with an ice cream maker and cooking the anglaise on the stove top. Thanks for posting.
So you don’t have to chill it in fridge before churning in ice cream maker? Just wanted to make sure – other recipes I’ve seen call for chilling first before churning. Never made ice cream before, but just got an ice cream maker!!! Thank you.
Your heavy cream and milk should be cold from the fridge already, so no chilling required. Good luck! I hope you love it!
