Sweetened Condensed Milk

Making your own sweetened condensed milk is super easy, and delicious. I don’t usually have it on hand, but thanks to food storage, I usually have powdered milk on hand, which is what this recipe uses. This recipe is so EASY, seriously. You will never buy another can of this stuff ever again.

Before you say, “Oh I found another method of doing this,” forget about it. Do it this way for sure! When I first learned you can make your own sweetened condensed milk at home, the recipe I tried had you whisk it in a pot over the stove. It was always super lumpy and I was miserable trying to make it work. I am so glad I found out about the blender method!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (200 g) granulated sugar
  • 1 cup (69 g) instant nonfat dry milk powder
  • ½ cup (118 ml) water
  • 1 Tbsp (14 g) butter

Instructions

  • Put sugar and powdered milk in a blender.
  • Put water and butter in a large microwaveable dish and let it come to a boil in your microwave; about 45-60 seconds. Keep an eye on it.
  • Add HOT water/butter mixture to mixer and blend until sugar dissolves. Scrape the sides if you need to and blend again. For best results, cool completely before using in dessert recipes. (The sweetened condensed milk will thicken more as it cools.)

  1. I just found this, tried it, and it works great! Gettin’ ready to make fudge! Thanks! I found you through Pinterest.

  2. I’m allergic to dairy and have always salivated over dessert recipes that included sweetened condensed milk… With this recipe I could make my own with powdered soy! Thank you so much!

  3. Going to try this with cocoa powder added. They used to make a chocolate sweetened condensed milk that was great for desserts. 😀

  4. Great recipe. I drink endless cups of hot tea with low-fat sweetened condensed milk. I always have a storage bowl filled with it in my fridge. Refrigerated it will last for several weeks, possibly as long as six. It thickens a bit and will darken in color, but I’m dropping it in hot boiling tea water, so that is not an issue. I wonder if there is a non-fat or low-fat version of the powdered milk? Also, I wonder if grainy stevia or splenda could be substituted for the sugar in order to make a low-calorie version. Worth a try! Thanks for pinning!

    1. I use non-fat milk for mine & it works great! I have not tried any other dry (non-liquid) sweeteners like splenda though. If you try it & it works out, please let me know! Thanks!

  5. Found this pinned on Pinterest and made it 5 min ago and it turned out great! Keep sharing these great and simple ideas 🙂

    1. That is great news! After that last comment I was hoping no one else was having problems. I use it often, so it’s always nice to hear when others are using it & it works just fine. Thanks for stopping by!

  6. Well POOP. I just made this and it turned out so disgusting! lol. I had to throw my whole cake away. 🙁 I was making it for a coconut poke cake (you mix sweetened condensed milk with cream of coconut and pour it over a yellow cake, top with whipped cream and toasted coconut). I followed everything exactly and it tasted like sugary fake milk. Maybe it was the powdered milk, I used the Aldi brand.

    1. Dangit! That is weird. I use it all the time! I never buy it anymore. How old is your powdered milk? Did the sugar dissolve well? Sometimes if you let it sit for 5 minutes & then re-stir/blend it that helps everything dissolve that might not right away. You can try refrigerating it over night too if you want b/c the longer it sets the better it gets. Did you taste the sweetened condensed milk/cream of coconut mixture before you poured it over the cake?

There are some other variations found on pinterest using real milk or coconut milk, but they take EXTREMELY longer b/c you are boiling the liquid down to reduce by half. Hope you can get it figured out!

      1. Hi Verna,

I don’t live near an Aldi, but any powdered milk should work just fine. The major difference will be the flavor. Instant will taste LESS cooked, whereas non-instant will taste MORE cooked. Since it’s just being used for sweetened condensed milk that is typically cooked and canned, it doesn’t matter which one you use. I hope this helps!

  7. I tried your recipe and it is one of the most amazing things I have ever found! I put it in the fridge to let it thicken up a little then did a taste test along side a can of store bought sweetened condensed milk, and I could not tell a difference between the two. Thank you so much for sharing this fabulous recipe!! P.S. I found you through a friend’s pin on Pinterest. 🙂

    1. Kimberly I am so happy that it worked out great for you. It really is a no brainer for me to use this recipe instead of buying a can. I use it all the time!

  8. Can this be made with soy powdered milk? I am lactose intolerant and can NOT use regular powdered milk! Has anyone tried it?

    1. It probably could, I don’t see why not. I would go ahead & try it. Let us know if it works out for you. Thanks for stopping by 🙂

    2. Maybe use DariFree instead of powdered milk? I’m going to try it and I’ll let you know! Dairy allergy here too, so I feel your pain! Lol

  9. I just made some, and it is delicious. Will be able to make delicious choc chip biscuits now, as I never buy condensed milk, but I always have skim milk powder on hand. Thanks heaps
