Sweetened Condensed Milk

Making your own sweetened condensed milk is super easy, and delicious. I don’t usually have it on hand, but thanks to food storage, I usually have powdered milk on hand, which is what this recipe uses. This recipe is so EASY, seriously. You will never buy another can of this stuff ever again.

Before you say, “Oh I found another method of doing this,” forget about it. Do it this way for sure! When I first learned you can make your own sweetened condensed milk at home, the recipe I tried had you whisk it in a pot over the stove. It was always super lumpy and I was miserable trying to make it work. I am so glad I found out about the blender method!

Instructions

  • Put sugar and powdered milk in a blender.
  • Put water and butter in a large microwaveable dish and let it come to a boil in your microwave; about 45-60 seconds. Keep an eye on it.

  1. Thank you so much for posting this. Sweetened Condensed Milk is so expensive. Especially around Christmas time when I make homemade fudge as gifts… this will save me a bundle… meaning I will have more to share. Love it.. Cheers, Diane

    1. I love this recipe, so I hope you do too! Thanks for stopping by!

  2. Wow!! Tried this in a pumpkin pie recipe. The pie was fantastic! I plan to bake another today. I am so glad you shared your recipe with us!

    1. That’s great! Thanks for leaving your review!

  3. Fantastic! I wish I would have known this when I lived in China. Sweetened Condensed milk is so expensive over there. Thanks!

  4. I’m rather curious how this works because commercially made sweetened condensed milk is made under extremely high pressure cooking. It’s for both keeping capabilities, and for the smoothness that is so trademark scm.

    1. So, this sweetened condensed milk cannot be canned, but it gets really thick after it is refrigerated. To achieve the smoothness, you need to make sure that your water/butter mixture is really hot & blend the mixture until everything is dissolved. It really works great! I use it for many recipes. I just don’t buy the cans anymore. My most recent recipe with it is Crockpot Caramel: https://www.dessertnowdinnerlater.com/2013/08/crockpot-caramel.html

  5. So good–I have made this for years. It’s a winner.

  6. This recipe is great! But I didn’t know that condensed milk is expensive in the USA. Here in Brazil, we can get one can for like, one dollar! It’s easier and costs less than making at home, haha.

    1. It’s around $1.30-$1.80 here. Not that bad, but I used to buy it only on sale for under $1. Now, I just make it at home. I try to be frugal & this way my powdered milk doesn’t go bad either. I use the powdered milk in cooking & baking. So I really love this recipe to use up some powdered milk & I make lots of desserts with this sweetened condensed milk.

  7. It works great! Anyone has tried it with soy milk powder? Or almond milk powder? Or anything else without lactose?

  8. I just made this and am amazed at how similar it tastes to the store-bought stuff! It was also very easy to make, and I’m pretty sure I’ll never be buying it readymade again. I also did the ultimate taste test with a cup of coffee, and one level tablespoon was enough to make the coffee sweet and creamy (as I like it). It’s incredibly rich but also incredibly sweet. I think next time I’ll experiment with less sugar.

  9. I just found this recipe on your blog and I definitely have to try this soon! I hate when I don’t have a can of this stuff and I have to go to the store and its so darn expensive. I think we have some leftover powdered milk from some other stuff, so I can’t wait to try it!
